Big Data is everywhere…

From modeling successful venture capital support to tracking meteotsunamis on the Great Lakes, Big Data a looks to change the way we do business and interact with the world around us. But despite success in a wide variety of spaces, one place it hasn’t become ubiquitous yet is in the K-12 schools.

…Just not in school

Stopping to reflect, it’s a wonder why it hasn’t taken a hold. Big Data hits key Common Core State Standards (CCSS) mathematical practices including modeling with mathematics, using appropriate tools strategically, and looking for and expressing regularity in repeated reasoning. It also is easy to see alignment with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) supporting the science and engineering practices of asking questions and defining problems, developing and using models, and analyzing and interpreting data. Big Data has been envisioned as changing the way that schools do business, but engaging the minds of our youngest learners? The system just has not progressed toward widely embedded Big Data concepts or intrigue in our schools.

K-12 at Big Data Ignite

To work toward inspiring both teachers and students in schools around Grand Rapids, Big Data Ignite will host a half-day session for local K-12 groups to explore the concepts surrounding Internet of Things, Machine Learning, and other Big Data themes. Two concurrent sessions will provide an opportunity for teachers and students to engage simultaneously in exploration, and students will utilize real data sets to look for patterns and draw conclusions. Teachers and students can stay for the keynote session immediately after the morning.
